Starbound is a 63' Custom Ketch and modern, expanded version of Joshua Slocum’s famous world traveling vessel SPRAY. In 1898, Joshua Slocum, at age 51, became the first man to sail single handed around the world. He did it in an extremely seaworthy vessel without an engine.
In 1950, she was originally built for the technical editor of Rudder Magazine. She was subsequently sold to Burl Ives, a widely loved American folk and sea-chanty singer. In the early 1970’s, under the new ownership of the Gordon and Nina Stuermer, she began the first of her two circumnavigations of the globe.
In the late 1990’s she was completely rebuilt with expanded accommodations; and then, in 2008, she was upgraded throughout with new furnishings, rigging, a new diesel engine, as well as complete up to date navigation and safety equipment. Her design expansion created an extraordinarily roomy and comfortable little ship (although we are not sure that Captain Slocum would have approved of all of her modern comforts. We suspect he would still insist on using his sextant and celestial tables for a mid-watch position fix instead of our modern GPS Chartplotter.
STARBOUND boasts a spacious galley and main settee for meals and entertaining, and an even more spacious protected cockpit and deck for and enjoying Maine’s coastline and salt air under sail. (although STARBOUND’s Captain will not be shy about asking you to take a turn at the wheel or hoist her gaff rig Mainsail). Her comfortable layout can accommodate large groups and families with four single bunks in the forward cabin, two single berths in the starboard mid-ship cabin, a double berth in a mid-ship port cabin and another single berth Captain’s cabin to port.
STARBOUND is the queen of the Buck's Harbor Charter Fleet, so we are excited to share her with you on a Maine Coast Adventure!
